The #LoveRecordStores campaign is here to help the invaluable independent record stores who have been hit by the catastrophic impact of COVID-19, many of which have been threatened with closure. To lose record stores, their knowledgeable staff, and spaces they inhabit to bring music fans together in more than just shopping, would be a disaster for future generations. I have provided a 1 hour mix comprising of the records I bought during 1990 to 1991, recorded using only two Technics decks and a mixer. Featuring music from some of the independent labels which helped shape my taste and influence my own label, Phantasy, such as Warp, Shut Up And Dance, Outer Rhythm, Play It Again Sam, Mute, Kickin', Network and many more.

Daniel Miller grew up in North West London, the son of refugee actors from Vienna. In 1978 he founded Mute, the influential independent British label, to release his own 7” single - The Normal ‘Warm Leatherette’ / ‘TVOD’. Since then, Mute has grown into a global group of companies and Daniel remains, now as ever, heavily focussed on Mute’s creative output. Caught by the DJ bug after an invitation to play Berghain from Karl O’Connor aka Regis, Daniel has continued to play regularly worldwide.

My friend James Endeacott asked me to do a mix for his ace Soho Radio show 'Morning Glory', “Yes!” I said, "is a tape OK?" I wasn’t joking, I can record records to a cassette but apart from that no idea! So I spoke to my mate Pete Fowler (as I knew he was a thoroughly modern chap) and he guided and encouraged me through the process of turning vinyl into digital! I’m now well and truly versed in the art and so here’s my second attempt at an all vinyl mix for the wonderful new Love Records Stores event!

Stranger Than Paradise Records is Noreen, Phil & Sonny - we’re long time friends, and previous record store colleagues. STP is a small independent record shop dedicated to sourcing the best new releases and reissues. Our store is located in Hackney, within the vibrant Mare Street Market - a large 900 sqm multipurpose space formerly used in the 80’s as a dole office, it now hosts DJ’s, a restaurant, late-night bar, deli, coffee roastery, a florist and hairdresser! I spent my teenage years in Canterbury where we had Richards Records, Parrot Records, Fat Alberts, techno and house upstairs in Third Eye and second hand stands in the indoor market and Dave from the band Gizmo in Canterbury Rock (the only survivor I believe) I would take the train up to London for gigs and go to Rough Trade in Covent Garden, FatCat and Black Market. Later I lived in Brixton and would shop in Red, Blacker Dread and Supertone. Later still I worked in soho and became a regular nuisance in Sounds Of The Universe. All the above provided me succour, sound and somewhere to go. Most are very sadly missed. For this mix I imagined myself by some big speakers outdoors in an altered state (a situation also sadly missed) and got on with it.
